Meniscal Root Tears

A meniscal root tear happens when the meniscus detaches from its anchor point on the bone.

When this occurs, the meniscus can no longer distribute load properly across the joint. Instead, the force of your body weight transfers directly into the bone beneath the cartilage, causing stress fractures, SIFK, fluid buildup, and localized bone damage over time. Partial meniscectomy, debridement, and meniscal extrusion can have a similar effect; disrupting load distribution and placing excessive stress on the bone beneath the surface. Subchondral Insufficiency Fracture of the Knee (SIFK) is a stress fracture of the subchondral bone and a common source of knee pain. It can develop gradually alongside conditions like osteoarthritis and meniscal injury, or more suddenly as the result of an ACL injury, acute athletic trauma, or mechanical overloading of the bone.

Without proper healing, it can progress to bone collapse and may require more advanced surgical management. MRI is key for diagnosing SIFK.
