Dr. S. Evan Carstensen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic shoulder, knee, hip, and sports medicine specialist. Dr. Carstensen specializes in helping patients regain mobility and return to the activities that they love. He manages injuries both nonoperatively and operatively by specifically utilizing evidence-based medicine and minimally invasive techniques to address pathologies of the shoulder, hip, knee, foot and ankle. He has particular interest in shoulder arthroplasty (replacement), rotator cuff tears, suprascapular nerve impingement, shoulder dislocation and instability, distal biceps tears, patellar instability, ligamentous and cartilaginous knee and ankle injuries, cartilage transplantation, biologics like platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and Achilles pathology. He also specializes in minimally invasive quadriceps tendon anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
Dr. Carstensen was born and raised in Blacksburg, VA. Prior to joining Alabama Bone and Joint, he attended Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC where he graduated magna cum laude with honors. He decided to remain at Wake Forest for medical school before completing his internship and orthopaedic training at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Following his time in Charlottesville, he was selected to pursue subspecialized training in sports medicine at Emory University and further focused on the shoulder, hip, knee, and foot and ankle. During his time in Atlanta, he served as a team physician for the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Hawks, as well as Georgia Tech football and basketball.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife (who is a family medicine physician), sons, and dog.
