Jesse Doty, MD

Jesse Doty M.D. is a Tennessee native who grew up in Rogersville where he graduated from Cherokee High School in 1999. At Carson-Newman University, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, graduating magna cum laude in 2003. He attended four years of medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis where he graduated in 2007 with Honors, including election into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. The next five years were spent completing a surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga, graduating as a chief resident in 2012. In 2013, he completed a one-year foot and ankle surgical fellowship under the direction of globally renown surgeon, Dr. Michael Coughlin, at the Saint Alphonsus Foot and Ankle Clinic in Boise, Idaho. After completion of his fellowship, in the summer of 2013, he spent time in Los Angeles, California with Dr. Richard Ferkel at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute treating professional athletes to further his insight into sports injuries and small joint arthroscopy.

Dr. Doty returned to Chattanooga to begin his professional practice career in 2013. He was honored to join his friend and mentor Dr. Richard Alvarez, where they practiced together for nearly a decade prior to Dr. Alvarez’s retirement. They both took pride in expanding surgical techniques and improving outcomes with care pathways previously not available to East Tennesseans. Specifically, Dr. Doty’s clinical interests included correction of complex lower extremity deformities and the use of external fixation techniques expanded by his participation in the 1st annual Taylor Spatial Frame Global Masters 2015 forum in London, UK. He developed a widely evolved clinical practice focused primarily on the lower extremity. Including minimally invasive surgery, bunions and hammertoes, sports injuries, arthroscopy, fractures, chronic deformities, and ankle replacement. Particularly, as ankle replacements have become exceedingly more advanced, he has been at the forefront of this technological evolution. In 2013, he participated and presented research at the STAR Ankle Replacement Masters Forum in Chicago, IL.  Dr. Doty and Dr. Drew Murphy (Memphis, TN) currently serve as the Principle Investigators for a multi-center industry sponsored trial including 10 sites across the U.S. evaluating ankle replacement outcomes.

In the last 15 years, Dr. Doty has over 50 peer reviewed publications with numerous podium presentations. He has participated as teaching faculty at several surgeon instructional courses nationally on an annual basis. He also feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with many international friends and colleagues. Dr. Doty recognizes the importance of learning from other cultures and appreciating international surgical techniques to enhance our treatment methods here in the U.S. In 2019, he was honored to present in Delhi, India and to perform instructional surgery at the Indian Foot & Ankle Society Meeting.  In 2022, he participated as an international guest speaker for the Australian Foot and Ankle Society in Cairns, Queensland. Basil, Switzerland and Annecy, France were locations of two international collaboration symposiums and invitational presentations in 2023. In 2024, he was excited to revisit the Indian Society in Karala, India and later present research in British Columbia, Canada. As recently as 2025, he presented his ankle replacement data to international colleagues in Alberta, Canada.

Through the years, Dr. Doty has been fortunate to forge relationships with many leaders in the medical device industry. His design contributions helped lay the groundwork for development of multiple successful surgical methods and implants. This includes time spent on design teams bringing ideas from paper to the patient and traveling to teach other surgeons reliable surgical tips and pearls. According to Dr. Doty, “Keeping Chattanoogans active is the reason I come to the office every day; however, it takes it to another level when I see design rationale that I participated in move the needle on patient outcomes globally. Many of these surgical evolutions can be incremental, but it’s evident when I listen to my patients, that these subtle improvements may impact their lives in a major way. I feel so thankful to have experienced that part of my career.”

Dr. Doty strives to always improve and provide advanced and compassionate care to his patients, while contributing to the educational training of the next generation of orthopedic surgery residents. He has served as Assistant Program Director and Professor at the University of Tennessee Department of Orthopedic Surgery. When he’s not operating, he enjoys biking, snow skiing, and watching school sports with his family.
